I've had a young-adult science fiction novel I've been trying to get published for ages now, but haven't had the overwhelming ambition to go all-out to catch an agent to get published.  (Still gotta work to eat, don't'cha know!)  Then I received an e-mail notification from Barnes & Noble about their newest e-book program, called "PubIt!" that lets you self-publish your own e-book.  I looked through the conditions and rules, saw my profit would be a whopping 65% of every sale instead of the expected 15% or so in print publishing, and realized I really have nothing to lose.  So, I now have a published 137,000-word e-book!  YAY!  I've posted the cover art here on deviantART, along with a link to the book's bn.com page search.barnesandnoble.com/Silv…, if anybody wants to see, and maybe hopefully be interested enough to buy...!  =]

Still here...

Heh.  Since my last entry was six months ago, I figured it was time to update.  =]

Mom just had cataract surgery on her right eye yesterday, so I've been busy dripping eyedrops into it since two days beforehand.  It really wasn't that bad of an experience, for either of us, though she said the drops the doctor put in at the start of the proceedure did most certainly sting like the dickens!  She can see better in that eye already, even though it's still dilated a good bit.  She's getting her left eye done on July 6th, and I think both our nerves will be settled down this time.

Our four acres of highly landscaped yard are coming along nicely this year; I hope to have some good pics to put up soon.  I still need to find a nursery to supply me with itty-bitty-baby (bare-root when possible) columnar arborvitae, white lilac bushes, DARK red flowering crab trees, full size burning bushes, and ninebark bushes, so I can work on finishing up the labyrinth (maze) I'm putting in on the two acres that used to be pasture.  No way I could afford decent sized plants even if I wanted them, which I don't--babies adapt to our windy weather better, and so long as I'm methodical about what plants with what growing rates I put in at what time, smaller gives me more time to get in the next batch that might otherwise be overshadowed and end up stunted instead of growing apace with the rest.  It's actually fairly complicated when you start thinking about all the details.  Fun, though!    It's kind of like living sculpture...

Speaking of sculpture, sort of--I make a cat ladder-tree.  Made from branches that came down in our yard, held together with screws, with three plywood platforms for beds fastened on it.  The cats love it!  I should have a picture ready for upload in a day or so--I'm having trouble getting images off my camera's card onto my computer.  The in-built card reader is dead, and external readers keep crashing the computer.

I've been so busy browsing art on this site and reading fanfiction, I haven't gotten any drawing done!  Ack!

::eyeballs date of last journal entry::  Huh.  I really am *not* into the frequent-journal thing...!  I just don't think my everyday life is going to interest anybody but me and the people directly involved in it.  ::shrugs::

Our veterinarian surprised us when we brought her our annual batch of Christmas cookies (you simply MUST spoil a good vet with low rates, you know!!).  I have a plastic-spine binder machine, and we've done home-made calendars with touched-up photos of our cats for the last couple years as Christmas presents.  Apparently our vet has a several people who want to *buy* our cat calendars for 2010!  ::still trying to pry jaw off the floor::  They would love last year's pictures, even!  Sheesh, and here I wasn't going to even do one for this year!  Luckily I religiously keep backup files of all my computer projects, so I only had to update the dates and wrangle my printer into cooperating.

My printer is a good printer; it's printed a gazillion-billion pages for me.  It has good quality even on the fast-draft setting, and the ink cartridges last a decent amount of time.

But my printer does not like card stock.

GRRRRR!!!  If it complains of a nonexistent paper jam *one* more time--!  AAGH!  I ended up having to use photo paper again--glossy side for the pictures, matte backing for the calendar days.  Except--suddenly, this year, every single ream of photo paper I can get my hands on has WATERMARKING all over the back!  ::rolls eyes heaven-wards in utter exasperation::

Well.  To cut to the chase--since deviantArt has a print option of calendars, I think I'm going to check out if/how my images need to be changed in order to go that route.

I've also finally started putting up a couple of my "KittiForms"--cat stick-figure doodles that I use to illustrate our cat behaviorism website.  I was inspired and made a few of them out of pipecleaners, too; I took pictures before giving them away with the cookies.  If anybody is interested after I post a picture or two of them, I'll give a try at a tutorial on them--they're not particularly hard, other than the faces.

Well.  Maybe I'll remember to update this journal before next Christmas!

Happy-Sad Day

1 min read
Happy Day--because my partners and I got our brand new website on cat behaviorism up and running: TheCatsCouch.com www.thecatscouch.com  (Where you can find out "Why is my cat *doing* that?!")  Wheee!  I'm officially a Webmaster--even running an honest-to-gosh message board!  =]  Some of the style of illustrations from the site will be popping up here in a few days.

Sad Day--because we've had four cats die in the last six months...thankfully three of them lived long and happy lives with us...::sniffling::  Fuzzball had kidney failure at 13 years last fall; 19-year-old Me-Oh-My developed cancer in the roof of her mouth, and passed in January; our year-and-a-half old "special ed" kitty, Doodlebug, passed some time this last Sunday afternoon while we were out, we think from his severe asthma; and the 18-year-old Mr. Whiskers passed of a massive coronary at about 2:15 this afternoon.  ::whimper::  At least I no longer have to give Whiskers his insulin shots twice daily...  ::breaks down and bawls for a while...::

Starting out

Well.  I've been finding so many interesting images on this site, I thought it was about time I shared a couple of my own.  I've been side-tracked by writing for the last few years, both fan-fiction and original stuff, and haven't drawn as much as I'd like--but I got one of those *nifty* HP tablet-screen laptops recently...OOOOOOOH is it lovely for drawing!  No more scanning things in, just draw right on the screen!
